The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is one of only five sites in California where annual counts exceed 10,000 butterflies. Monarch butterflies undertake an incredible migration, traveling more than 1,220 miles from the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada to the mountain forests of central Mexico. Every year, these striking orange and black beauties land on the lofty eucalyptus trees on Pismo State Beach, a critical waypoint in their migratory journey. The grove is easily accessible via California State Highway 1.
Monarch Season is late October thru February
Known scientifically as Danaus plexippus—a name derived from Greek, meaning “sleepy transformation”—these butterflies embody their species’ remarkable ability to hibernate and undergo metamorphosis.
Symbol of Transformation: Butterflies symbolize transformation, reflecting the journey of personal growth and change that humans experience. Just as a butterfly undergoes metamorphosis, humans can evolve, learn, and emerge stronger from life’s challenges
In the delicate wings of a monarch butterfly lies the story of transformation, migration, and survival against all odds.
